Some answers to questions you may have:
What makes you think I work at HubSpot? I'm using a number of B2B targeting methodologies, including LinkedIn PPC ads for listed employees, a Twitter campaign targeting HubSpotters, and pay-per-click ads on Facebook for people who live near Cambridge, MA and who like HubSpot. Odds are good that most people at HubSpot have a Facebook profile and are fans of the company page, even if they don't have HubSpot listed as an employer. This is about as "niche" a page as you can get, so you're probably either a HubSpot employee, a member of my technical team at MalliMedia that's helping me develop this, a friend, or you're my mother checking out my cool hire-me page (Hi Mom - I always told you the internet wasn't a fad!).
Why are you going to all this trouble instead of just filling out an application? Several reasons: One, I'm a fan of the unconventional. Two, resumes are easily overlooked or lost, and I'm sure you get many. Three, it gives me a chance to test out my "HQ City Residents are fans of the company page" Facebook PPC B2B theory. Four, I really want to work at HubSpot. One of my goals with this campaign is to identify the decison-maker for hiring at HubSpot. The idea of just submitting my resume to the system and not being able to follow up on my own makes me a little nervous. Instead of sitting at my e-mail inbox clicking refresh waiting to hear back, I'll rest assured that I'm capturing leads of HubSpot employees and that you're all being contacted at set intervals. They always tell us to think of applying for jobs like you're selling yourself. I'm just taking that to the next level with a full-blown B2B campaign - I'm selling my skills to HubSpot. After all, if I can't market myself who am I to be advising others?
Yeah, but isn't this overkill? An old Army instructor's answer to me when I asked if my battle plan for our training exercise was "overkill" best answers this (expletives have been removed to preserve page space): "There's no such thing as overkill. You can't 'overwin'. There are only mission objectives, and those that fail to achieve them. Unless you've received authorization from HQ to fail without me hearing about it, your only concerns are your mission objectives."
Why do you want to work at HubSpot? I still remember the exact moment I found out about HubSpot two years ago. The CFO of my company sent me a link to your page, and it was a rare "Eureka!" moment. I was at a Starbucks with my then-girlfriend, who joked that I never looked at her with the same expression of admiration that I looked at your blog and product detail page. There's a lot that I can learn from working with you at HubSpot, and there's a lot that I can contribute to your company and educating your clients on the importance and best practices of the HubSpot system. The more I read about your company culture, your internal wiki, your openness to new ideas, and your position at the cutting edge of battle for the very future of marketing itself - the more convinced I am that HubSpot is where I belong.
What do you want to do at HubSpot? My ideal job at HubSpot would be working with our clients on their internet marketing efforts and leveraging the HubSpot software - an Inbound Marketing Consultant. Of course, I don't know everything about every position available, so I'm open to suggestions.
Why do you want to work as an Inbound Marketing Consultant? Everyone is motivated by something - I am motivated by challenges. It's why I started my own business, and it's why I liked working as a consultant with small businesses. Working at HubSpot means a literally unlimited supply of new challenges as new clients come on board with new questions, new customer bases, and new objectives. I'm geekishly excited about having an unlimited supply of new challenges helping our clients use our software and methodologies to boost their businesses.
